The overall economic recovery of the industry has been maintained

Production continues to recover

In the first half of this year, under the continuous improvement of the domestic market situation and the support of the coordinated development of national macro policies, the comprehensive prosperity of China's textile industry has maintained a recovery, and the development of enterprises is expected to improve. According to the survey of the China Textile Industry Federation, the comprehensive prosperity index of China's textile industry in the second quarter was 57%, up 10.7 and 1.4 percentage points from the same period last year and the first quarter of this year, respectively, which is a higher level since 2022.

Affected by the downturn in external demand, the production situation of the textile industry has fluctuated slightly this year, but the decline has gradually narrowed. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the capacity utilization rate of the textile industry and chemical fiber industry in the first half of the year was 76.2% and 83.2%, slowing down 1.8 and 0.8 percentage points from the same period last year, but rising 0.7 and 1.1 percentage points from the first quarter of this year, higher than the capacity utilization level of 74.7% in the manufacturing industry in the same period. In the first half of the year, the industrial added value of enterprises above designated size in the textile industry decreased by 3% year-on-year, the growth rate fell 3.9 percentage points from the same period last year, but it rose 0.7 percentage points from the first quarter of this year, and the industrial added value of chemical fiber, cotton textile, filament weaving and other sub-industries achieved positive growth.

Domestic sales are steadily picking up

Export pressure and resilience coexist

Since the beginning of this year, China's production and life order has been restored in an orderly manner, and the expansion of consumption scenarios and the effective landing of pro-consumption policies have driven the domestic demand for textiles and clothing to achieve better growth. According to the data of the National Bureau of Statistics, in the first half of the year, China's retail sales of clothing, shoes and hats, needles and textile products above quota increased by 12.8% year-on-year, and the cumulative growth rate has maintained a double-digit growth level since April this year. New models such as live short videos led to better growth of online retail channels, the first half of China's online retail sales of wear goods increased by 13.3%, the growth rate rose 10.9 and 4.7 percentage points compared with the same period last year and the first quarter of this year, higher than the retail growth rate of eating and using goods in the same period.

Affected by factors such as shrinking overseas demand and more complex international trade environment, the export pressure of China's textile industry has increased significantly this year, but exports to some markets still show good resilience. According to China Customs data, in the first half of the year, China's textile and apparel exports totaled 142.68 billion US dollars, a decrease of 8.8%, the growth rate is 20.5 and 1.9 percentage points slower than the same period of last year and the first quarter of this year. Among the main export products, the export value of textiles was 67.7 billion US dollars, a decrease of 10.9%, a decrease of 1.2 percentage points compared with the first quarter; Clothing exports amounted to $74.98 billion, down 5.9% year-on-year and 4.6 percentage points deeper than the first quarter. In the main export markets, China's textile and apparel exports to the United States, the European Union and Japan declined year-on-year, while textile and apparel exports to South Korea, Australia, Russia and five Central Asian countries along the "Belt and Road" have achieved better growth.
